Hogan’s Alley Revitalization: A Tribute to Berryville’s Heritage and Community Spirit
In the heart of downtown Berryville, Virginia, a once-overlooked passageway has been transformed into a vibrant community space. Hogan’s Alley, connecting West Main Street to the Crow Street parking lot, now stands as a testament to the town’s rich history and the collective efforts of its residents. In the heart of downtown Berryville, Virginia, a once-overlooked passageway has been transformed into a vibrant community space.

Honoring R. John Hogan
Named in 1998 after the late R. John Hogan, Berryville’s esteemed Town Manager from 1985 until his passing in 1997, the alley serves as a lasting tribute to his dedication to the community. Hogan was instrumental in developing the Berryville Area Development Plan, which has played a crucial role in preserving the town’s historic charm by preventing incongruent developments on its outskirts.

A Collaborative Transformation
The revitalization of Hogan’s Alley was spearheaded by Berryville Main Street (BMS) with support from the Town of Berryville. Funded by a $12,500 Community Vitality Grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, the project also benefited from over 4,000 volunteer hours and contributions from local businesses. Notably, Living Landscape Design sponsored six commercial-grade planters, enhancing the alley’s aesthetic appeal.
Celebrating Berryville’s Heritage
The alley now features a mural titled A Genuine Vacation by local artist Amanda Horn, celebrating Berryville’s agricultural roots and its 1798 charter. Additionally, a historic iron window guard from the former Berryville Train Depot has been installed at the alley’s entrance, symbolizing the town’s railroad history.

Enhancing Safety and Accessibility
Beyond its aesthetic improvements, the project addressed practical concerns. Drainage issues were resolved by redirecting runoff into a storm drain, and the alley’s surface was treated with an athletic-grade coating to mitigate winter ice. Removable bollards and upgraded lighting enhance pedestrian safety, making the alley a welcoming thoroughfare for residents and visitors alike.
